This book aims to explore midwifery from a number of different viewpoints. These different perspectives matter. This is because the midwife’s point of view tends to be neglected due to, unsurprisingly, the midwife’s main focus being on those for whom she provides care. Thus, less is written about the way in which the midwife views midwifery in general and her own job in particular. A factor that is consistent throughout midwifery, though, is the fundamental nature of midwifery as a form of practice. While there may be any number of ways of approaching, analysing or explaining midwifery, they all come down to the primacy of the actual activities or behaviour of the midwife, which become evident in the process of attending a childbearing woman. In spite of all the technological developments in maternity care, it is the practice of the midwife that continues to provide the essential focus for all those involved in midwifery.
