Nurses are charged with the responsibility to teach newly diagnosed clients with diabetes and to review with others the multiple aspects of diabetes care. Diabetes management has changed greatly in the last few years with regard to diet, medication, and exercise recommendations. It is difficult for nurses to keep up and to help clients work with the new research that is improving the lives of diabetics and decreasing or postponing the many long-term complications. Too many nurses do not practice teaching and learning strategies as applied to the child, parent, and adult learner. Most are frustrated by the apparent lack of compliance of some clients with diabetes and fail to understand motivation theory and the need to individualize their teaching.
