There has been much change in the spheres of health and social care provision as well as
nurse education since the first edition of this text was published. Lord Darzi, the author
of a government publication, sets a new foundation for a health service that empowers
staff and provides patients with choice in England (Department of Health [DH], 2008).
The initiative ensures that health care will be provided on a personalised basis, and that
it will be fair, will include the most effective treatments provided within a safe system
and will help patients to stay healthy.
