Since my first introduction to Arlie Russell Hochschild's (1983) The
Managed Heart as an undergraduate sociology student, I have been
fascinated by her notion of emotional labour. To me, she fills that gap in
social theory which seems to comment on a society filled with human
beings with no heart or soul.
