This volume arose from a series of international workshops on “Historical
Disasters in a Cultural-comparative Perspective” initiated by Gerrit
Jasper Schenk and Franz Mauelshagen and funded by the German
Research Foundation (2005–2009). The results of the earlier meetings
have been made available in a series of publications.
